Hello everyone, we hope your summer has been as eventful and full of sunshine as ours. It's been quite a while since I've put fingers to keyboard for a blog post, due to a mixture of unfortunate circumstances and exciting new developments. A cloud was cast over our summer when I was involved in a car accident, t-boned by an uninsured driver – a frustrating reminder of the large number of uninsured drivers in the city and the consequential sky-rocketing insurance rates. Thankfully, my own insurance came through and I'm once again back on the road with a new-to-me car.
On a brighter note, we've been channeling our energies into a plethora of house projects. Our efforts have been geared toward procuring our Short Term Rental License. The city of New Orleans has adopted a lottery system, only permitting one license per block. Fortunately, we are the lone applicants on our block, and provided our paperwork is in order, we should soon be welcoming guests into our New Orleans cottage!
Adding another feather to my cap, I'm thrilled to announce that I've filed the affidavit for my minister's credentials with Orleans Parish. This means I am now officially authorized to perform wedding ceremonies in the area. If you're looking to tie the knot amidst the vibrant culture and romantic charm of New Orleans, your search for a celebrant ends here!
Let's shift our focus to an iconic culinary delight that’s intricately woven into the fabric of New Orleans - the beloved beignet. The beignet, derived from the French term for 'bump', is not just a dessert; it's a sweet morsel of history that has delighted taste buds for centuries.
Its journey to Louisiana started with the French Acadians in the 18th century. These early settlers brought with them this recipe of deep-fried choux pastry. Over time, the beignet underwent a beautiful transformation, emerging as the fluffy, sugar-dusted treat that we adore today. Now, it's not just a pastry, it's a tradition - a comfort food savored alongside a steaming café au lait, celebrated by both locals and tourists alike.
In New Orleans, you're never too far from a place to satisfy your beignet craving. The most recognized, though not my personal favorite, is Café Du Monde. Its fame extends beyond New Orleans, with people around the world familiar with its French Quarter location. But don't forget, there's also a branch nestled within City Park.
However, for my palate, the best beignets in the French Quarter come from a lesser-known spot - Café Beignet on Decatur. This quaint establishment nails the combination of a perfectly fluffy interior with a lightly crisp exterior, all hidden under a mountain of powdered sugar.
Yet, if you were to ask me where to find the finest beignets in the city, I would unhesitatingly direct you towards Morning Call. In my opinion, their version of the beignet simply transcends the ordinary.
So, while you're in New Orleans, make sure to explore beyond the beaten path. Each location offers a different experience, a unique twist on this classic treat, further solidifying the beignet's place in our city's vibrant culinary landscape.
For fans of this fluffy delight, our etsy shop is home to a wide range of NOLA-inspired merchandise. One of our most popular items is a shirt that playfully exclaims, "Beignet, Done Dat!". Wearing this shirt will not only show off your love for this tasty pastry but also your appreciation for the rich culture and history of New Orleans. So, if you're a beignet enthusiast or a lover of the Crescent City, check out our Etsy store today! We look forward to bringing you more tales and treats from New Orleans soon. Until then, stay safe and keep the New Orleans spirit alive!
